Zach Clough has admitted that he has been "desperate" to leave Nottingham Forest this season, with the midfielder still surplus to requirements under Sabri Lamouchi.

The 25-year-old signed for Forest from Bolton Wanderers in January 2017, hitting the ground running and scoring four goals in his first 14 games for the Reds.

But the arrival of Aitor Karanka the following season saw Clough fall down the pecking order, and the attacking midfielder hasn't made a single first-team appearance for the Reds since January 2018.

The attacker has spent time on loan with Bolton and Rochdale, but after flattering to deceive, he now finds himself completely out of favour on Trentside.

Clough is yet to be given a chance by Sabri Lamouchi this season, and whilst plenty of other players have moved on, Clough has failed to secure a move away from the City Ground and start afresh elsewhere.

Speaking on the Lion of Vienna Suite Podcast, Clough has admitted that he has been "desperate" to leave this season, and a return to Bolton would have been a preferred choice.

He said: "I was desperate to get out of Forest all season. Bolton would have been high on my list to come back to, I had my happiest memories there.

"It’s hard to say when I can come back to the club, hopefully I will be back at some point, it’s just hard to say when."

The Verdict

I think the next time the transfer window opens, Clough has to force an exit away from the City Ground.

He's now 25 years of age and has wasted a couple of years playing for the reserves, and now is the time for him to get out and start afresh elsewhere.

It has been a real fall from grace for him, and it's sad to see as he was once a real talent with great potential.
