Charlton Athletic fan pundit Robert Smith has assessed the likelihood of his side securing a deal to bring Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney to The Valley in January.

It is a move they tries to pull-off in the summer, with Football Insider reporting that they had a £4million bid rejected by the Posh, and Smith has his doubts over whether they will improve that offer.

"Despite Peterborough being synonymous as a selling club you don’t get bargains when dealing with Darragh MacAnthony," the regular punter told Football League World.

"They turned down £4million in the summer, he’s then gone on and scored nine league goals and we’re only into early October, so it’s clear the price won't have come down.

"History shows you with the sales of the likes of (Britt) Assombalonga and (Jack) Marriott you’re paying top end prices.

"Will Charlton go above four million? I’m not convinced they will, unless they are at the top end of the table and Bowyer can convince the owner that it could be the difference in making a play-off spot which in itself is a tall order."

The former Northampton Town and Newcastle United man has netted nine goals already in League One this season, following on from his impressive 16-goal haul in the last campaign.

With star Addicks man Taylor continuing his spell on the sidelines, it is likely that Bowyer will move to strengthen his front-line in the January window.

However, with Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony insisting that the striker is not for sale, it is likely to take a huge offer to prise him away from London Road.

Charlton currently sit in tenth place with 11 matches played this season as they head into the international break, with Taylor sitting top of the scoring charts with five goals.
