Sunderland manager Jack Ross will be nervously looking over his shoulder as interest mounts in his young striker Josh Maja who is a target of Middlesbrough and Bristol City, according to reports.

Maja has been a major player in Sunderland's efforts to get back into the Championship with 10 goals in 16 appearances in League One.

So with Bristol City possible in competition for Maja's signature, how much should they be looking to spend on the player?

We discuss.....

You’d be reluctant to break the bank for him, despite his good form this season.

The striker’s contract situation at Sunderland means he will go on the cheap, and I’d expect clubs to be offering somewhere between £2-3m.

That’s as high as I can see Bristol going if a contract isn’t agreed at the Stadium of Light.

If they did it would be a typical Bristol City and Lee Johnson signing.

Having failed to sign a new deal so far, Josh Maja could well be holding out for a move away from the club in the New Year.

And if he does I can see the Robins going for him.

If they want to get him, however, they will need to spend some money and if they are to get him I would imagine - despite his contract coming to an end in the summer, potential comes into play too.

I would imagine around £4million or above if they want to prize the striker away from the Stadium of Light.

I'd say quite a bit.

You're surely looking around the £8m mark and that is a considerable amount.

City need to see if Mo Eisa can get up and running before they chase down Maja in earnest.
