We are approaching the end of the transfer window but there will still be a lot of deals to happen and Middlesbrough are a club who are expected to be active before the deadline.

Jonathan Woodgate is trying to build a squad capable of winning promotion and it appears he has identified the two full-back positions as area the Teesside outfit need to strengthen.

Blackpool’s Marc Bola has signed up to give Boro a youthful, attacking option down the left and reports suggest that Charlton’s Anfernee Dijksteel is the man they want down the right flank.

And, here we look at this potential transfer for our latest FLW Six Pointer…

1) Firstly, what type of player is Dijksteel?

“An attack-minded full-back, the Dutchman was a standout player for the Addicks last season as they memorably won promotion to the Championship.

“Even though he is capable defensively, arguably the best aspect of his game is how Dijksteel gets forward, with his pace and athleticism a real asset to the team in the final third.

“Those qualities, combined with the fact he is only 22, means he would be exactly the sort of player Woodgate wants.”

2) Would Middlesbrough represent a step up for the right-back?

“It might not be what Charlton fans want to hear but you’d have to say a move to Boro would be a step up.

“There is an uncertainty as to how Woodgate will cope in his first managerial job but most neutrals would agree that Boro are much better equipped for promotion than a Charlton side who will be concentrating on staying up.”

3) So, he would be open to making the move?

“Given that, you’d have to say yes.

“Presumably Dijksteel’s ambition is to play in the top-flight and as mentioned, Middlesbrough will fancy their chances next season.

“As well as that, the Addicks financial issues are well-documented so you would imagine that a move up north would also benefit the player from a financial perspective too.”

4) But, Charlton will be reluctant to sell?

“Without a doubt, because he is an important player.

“In fairness to under-fire owner Roland Duchatelet, manager Lee Bowyer has stated that the chairman has rejected an offer already from Boro and they are adamant the player isn’t for sale.

“Whether that stance changes if a bigger bid comes in remains to be seen but the noises coming from The Valley are that they won’t let Dijksteel go.”

5) How does his contract situation impact things?

“Despite those claims, the right-back is entering the final year of his contract and that puts Charlton in a difficult situation.

“They want to tie Dijksteel down to a longer deal but the reality is that he is in the best position here.

“If he refuses to extend his stay in the capital then it would make sense from Charlton’s perspective to cash in during this window.”

6) Finally, can you see this transfer happening?

“Given his contract is running down, you wouldn’t be surprised to see this happen.

“Boro will clearly have to go in with an increased offer but he is a player that would improve their XI and is someone that Woodgate clearly rates.

“Any club in the world are vulnerable when a player goes into the last year of their contract and ultimately that could see Charlton eventually agree a fee with Boro if the player wants to go.”
