Middlesbrough continue to consolidate their position in the Championship play-off places after a 2-0 win over QPR at the weekend left them in fifth spot, just seven points off the automatic spots, with a game in hand on some of the sides above them.

In his post-match press conference, Rangers manager Steve McClaren was quick to praise the impact that Jon Obi Mikel has had on the Boro side since his arrival on a free in January, as reported on Teeside Live.

McClaren explained: "They've got one of the best, a Champions League winner. He dominates in there, he takes care of the ball" adding "Every team needs a Mikel. He's certainly the kind of enforcer in there, defensively and he keeps the ball ticking."

So has the signing of Obi Mikel been a masterstroke for Boro?

Gary Hutchinson

“I agree.

“It slipped under the radar a little, maybe because it’s Boro and they’ve missed out on so many targets.

“It’s a big signing for them and he’s had a real impact.”

Jacob Potter

"It’s one of the signings of the season.

"I was stunned to see Mikel willing to drop down into the Championship, and he’s shown his quality with Boro since he signed for the club.

"He is the missing piece in their promotion jigsaw this season."

George Harbey

"You have got to agree.

"Mikel has been exceptional since signing for Boro, and gives them real quality and calmness on the ball in midfield.

"What a signing he is turning out to be."

Jay Taylor

“Initially I thought the signing would be pointless, but it has proven to be a great addition.

“Boro have looked even more solid with him in the side.

“And it gives them more chance to get the ball forward and not worry as much at the back with a man like Mikel on their side.

“It’s been a surprising success.”
