Sunderland will play against local rivals Newcastle U21s in the last 16 of the Checkatrade Trophy.

The tie was announced earlier today after the two sides were drawn together in what promises to be a high-profile clash for the competition.

Some Premier League and Championship sides have been allowed to put their U21 teams into the competition in the past few seasons for the competition that used to be strictly for League One and League Two sides.

That has already thrown up one derby this season, with Port Vale hosting Stoke in a game that was overshadowed by violence in the week.

Sunderland boss Jack Ross has generally made changes for the cup this season, although the Black Cats still comfortably progressed from their group.

However, it remains to be seen how serious he takes this game with the league still surely their priority.

As you would expect, the chance to face Newcastle, even in this situation, has excited Sunderland supporters.
