After a hugely impressive campaign under Marcelo Bielsa, Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is a player in serious demand, as the beginning of the 2019/20 campaign draws ever closer.

The 23-year-old was a regular for Bielsa's side last season, and along with Pablo Hernandez, he was undoubtedly one of Leeds' standout performers in what turned out to be a heartbreaking season for the Whites.

But after a hectic couple of weeks of transfer activity, FLW writer George Harbey discusses the latest on Kalvin Phillips' future at Elland Road...

Firstly, what's the latest on Kalvin Phillips?

"A couple of weeks ago, reports from the Telegraph emerged, claiming that Aston Villa were set to launch a £14million bid for Phillips, after Dean Smith's side won promotion to the top-flight.

"In response to the interest from the Villans, The Sun now claim that Leeds have slapped a huge £30million price tag on Phillips, who still has two years left on his contract at Elland Road."

Is he worth the £30million?

"It's a tough one, as in the Championship, it is still a lot of money for clubs to receive for their players.

"You can probably see why Leeds value him so highly from a financial perspective, as he still has two years left on his contract at Elland Road, and they quite simply have no reason to sell him.

"You can't blame Leeds one bit for slapping such a lucrative price tag on his shoulders."

Why is he valued at that price?

"It's hard to put into words how important Phillips is to Leeds under Marcelo Bielsa.

"Nobody would have expected Phillips to be valued so highly by the club a year or so ago, but he really has come on leaps and bounds under the Argentine.

"He gives them perfect balance in midfield, he can operate well in the three-man defence if needs be, but he's the best holding midfielder in the Championship by some distance."

Can you see Aston Villa wanting to pay that for him?

"I can't see Villa wanting to have anything to do with Phillips or Leeds any more.

"They have money to spend and they clearly like him as a player, but £30million is a lot of money to spend for a newly-promoted Premier League side, especially when they still need to pay to sign the likes of Tyrone Mings and Axel Tuanzebe."

How do you think Phillips is feeling right now?

"I think Phillips is the type of player and the type of character who won't let this transfer speculation phase him going into the new season.

"Okay, it's really the first time that he's had some big, big clubs weigh up big, big moves for him in his career, but he loves Leeds United and Leeds United love him.

"He's come out and said on numerous occasions how pride he is to wear the shirt, and I think he will be focused on getting Leeds into the Premier League above all else."

Finally, how confident are you that Leeds will keep hold of Phillips this summer?

"Even if Leeds didn't slap a £30million price tag on Phillips' shoulders, I still don't think that he would have left Elland Road this summer.

"Leeds is his boyhood club, he has such a close affinity with the fans and players alike, and I think that winning promotion with Leeds would mean much more to him then finishing in the bottom half of the Premier League with Villa.

"He won't leave, I just can't see it."
