Newly promoted Tranmere Rovers have announced that captain Steve McNulty will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of next month.

The 35-year-old defender has skippered Tranmere to back to back promotions, coming on as an 82nd minute substitute as the Prenton Park club beat Newport 1-0 after extra time in Saturday's League One play-off final at Wembley, just 12 months after winning the National League play-off final to secure their return to the Football League.

Since joining Tranmere - initially on loan - from Luton Town in October 2015, McNulty has gone on 151 appearances and score four goals for the club, earning him cult figure status at Prenton Park in the process.

Confirming the news of McNulty's departure, both manager Micky Mellon and chairman Mark Palios described the 35-year-old as a club legend, with many Tranmere fans sharing a similar statement as they responded to the news on Twitter.
