Barnsley are in the running to sign Leeds winger Mallik Wilks, according to reports from journalist Adam Pope.

The BBC reporter said that Barnsley are 'still in the race' to sign the forward, who is also wanted by Championship counterparts Hull City.

The 20-year-old has been on loan at fellow Yorkshire club Doncaster Rovers, where he has endured a fantastic campaign, with the youngster scoring 16 times in 55 appearances to help his team finish sixth in League One.

Wilks is now back at Leeds, where his future is uncertain - Leeds have already signed three wingers for the first team squad this season, and it is hard to imagine him getting regular football under Bielsa.

Hull, now managed by Grant McCann - who was managing him last season at Doncaster - are chasing the winger, and with Jarrod Bowen's future up in the air, he could help fill the large 22-goal void that could be vacant if he leaves.

Wilks has only appeared once for Leeds in an FA Cup game in January 2017, but did come through the youth system, meaning Leeds might not be keen to offload him full-time, especially if he can prove himself in the Championship next season.

The Verdict

Despite Barnsley's interest, Hull seems like a great fit for Wilks who will be under a coach who knows how to get the best out of him.

At only 20 years, it doesn't take a lot of foresight to imagine him being a top player in a few years, so even if Leeds don't see him in the first-team fold now, a good season could change that.

He's contracted until 2022, according to Trasnfermarkt, so if Leeds allow him to go on loan this season and he succeeds, and they still don't see him as part of the first-team, his value would increase tenfold, so I would be surprised if they allow him to go permanently, unless a really healthy offer comes in.
