Championship side Barnsley interested in making a move for Leeds United midfielder Alex Mowatt, according to Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay.

Alex Mowatt has only started four times for Leeds United in the Championship this season, which suggests that his departure would not have a particularly adverse effect on Leeds United's strong season so far.

The 25-year-old midfielder is in the final six months of his contract with the Leeds United academy graduate set to leave the West Yorkshire club at the end of the season, if a contract extension cannot be agreed.

Yorkshire rivals Barnsley have emerged as a frontrunner for Mowatt's signature as they attempt to find a suitable replacement for Conor Hourihane.

Paul Heckingbottom has already brought Matty James to Oakwell on a season-long loan.

However, with the departure of both Conor Hourihane and Sam Morsy, Heckingbottom seemingly acknowledges that he needs to bolster his midfield options.
