The former Everton man joined the Reds three years ago but struggled to establish himself as a regular and in that time he managed just eight goals in 45 games for the east Midlands outfit.
And, having spent last season on loan in Belgium with Waasland-Beveren, a summer move did seem inevitable for the 27-year-old and that was announced by the Reds on their official site yesterday.
Whilst that means Martin O’Neill won’t have had a chance to work with the player, the Irishman already has a few options up top and will be on the lookout for a new striker this summer anyway.
Therefore, most fans understood the decision to let Vellios go, although some felt he deserved more of an opportunity earlier in his career with the Reds.
Here’s some of the reaction to his departure on Twitter…
Undisclosed fee!!! If we got a mars bar and pack of skips for him that’s a good deal ???? #nffc

Decent player, never got much of a look in and was hit or miss when he did.
