Barnsley were on the cusp on a relegation battle in the winter of 2018, struggling to find their feet in the Championship after earning promotion.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom had only a couple of months left before he jumped ship to Leeds, but the transfer window was still his to do with as he pleased.

He made a couple of big signings in that window, many coming late in the day on the 31st of January. One big name, literally, was Christoph Knasmullner from Admira Wacker.

As a youth, he'd been with both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, but had fallen on hard times and ended up in Austria. His record there was impressive, 12 goals from 18 matches had him marked out as a key player for the Austrian side.

This was to be his big break in the English game and hopefully the saving grace for the Tykes in the Championship.

Things didn't quite work out the way the attacking midfielder might have liked. He came off the bench twice, once for just 13 minutes and latterly for an entire second half.

After impressing on March 6th against Cardiff, he started the clash with Middlesbrough but was hooked after an hour. There ended the Barnsley career of Christoph Knasmullner.

With little over 90 minutes of action to his name, he was sold in the summer, heading back to Austria to Rapid Vienna. Since then he's appeared in the Europa League and helped his side to third in their top flight.

As for Barnsley, they've survived without him too. They're on course for a return to the Championship, but the much-heralded arrival of the Austrian proved to be a false dawn 15 months ago.
