It has been a tough 18 months for Yosuke Ideguchi following his move to Leeds United in January 2018, with the midfielder losing his place in the Japan squad ahead of last summer’s World Cup before picking up a serious knee injury whilst out on loan in Germany.

Leeds made the decision to sign Ideguchi 18 months ago, with the midfielder arriving as a Japanese international with World Cup aspirations.

However, a failed loan with Cultural Leonesa spelled the end for his hopes in Russia, and Leeds quickly shipped him out to Greuther Fuerth on loan for the 2018/19 season.

A knee ligament injury picked up in October ruled Ideguchi out for the bulk of the Bundesliga 2 season, but the 22-year-old was able to return to play a part in the final three fixtures of the campaign.

Now, the Yorkshire Evening Post have provided an update on Ideguchi, stating that whilst Greuther Fuerth might not be able to fund a permanent move for the Japanese international, Leeds should be able to recoup money from his sale over the course of the summer.

Currently the Whites are preparing for a 16th consecutive season outside the Premier League, with Andrea Radrizzani admitting it is going to be a “difficult” summer for the Elland Road club.

The Verdict

Ideguchi’s move to Elland Road was a mistake in the first place, but this is encouraging news for Leeds heading into the summer.

You’d imagine the midfielder will be one of many the club look to move on, so to learn they will recoup money can only be seen as a plus.

Anything is going to help with Radrizzani already issuing negative talk about the transfer window.
