‘Yeah right’, ‘he wanted more money’ – These Sunderland fans respond to transfer admission

Josh Maja’s transfer admission has certainly got supporters talking.

The former Sunderland star gave an exclusive interview to the Sunderland Echo where he revealed that he would have stayed at the Stadium Of Light if he’d been offered a suitable contract.

The 20-year-old attracted criticism after leaving the Black Cats last January in favour of a move to Ligue 1 side Bordeaux.

Maja had just six months left on his contract, meaning that the Wearsiders were awarded a compensation fee for the starlet which amounted to significantly less than his true market value.

This left a bitter taste in supporters’ mouths, but Maja moved to address his move by saying: “It was a bit of…it was up and down.

“Basically, I wanted to stay. Given the right contract, I would have stayed.

Should Sunderland have tried harder to keep hold of Josh Maja?

“But at the time, I don’t think Sunderland were prepared to give me what I wanted so when the opportunity to play in one of Europe’s top five leagues came up, I couldn’t turn that down.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but it was one which to improve my career and my game I think I had to make.”

As you’d expect, supporters were quick to respond to his comments on social media.

Here’s how some Sunderland supporters reacted to the Sunderland Echo’s post.
