“It feels good to be back in England and it feels good to play for Reading Football Club,” he said while speaking to the club's official website.

Yakubu has signed on a free transfer that will keep him at the club until the end of the season, at least.

Yakubu, 32, last played in English football for Blackburn Roversin the 2011/12 season, where he went on to score 17 goals in 30 appearances.

The 6ft striker has been at a number of English clubs including Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton and Leicester City. Questions have been raised as to whether Yakubu can adapt to the rigorous and demands of the Sky Bet Championship, having not played in England for a while, however, the new Reading number 20 says he is fit.

“I’m so happy to be here. I've been training so hard in Qatar and I'm feeling fit, I'm just ready to go. After two and a half years away from England I'm back again – English football is some of the best in the world, both the Premier League and the Championship."

Yakubu was a free agent after a spell playing in Qatar, having played for Qatari side Al Rayyan, where he made eight appearances, scoring three goals.

The Nigerian forward was quick to praise Reading boss, Steve Clarke, for bringing him back to England:

“Without him (Clarke) I don’t think I’d be here today, thanks to the owners too – they worked so hard to bring me here. The club have fantastic training pitches and a big stadium. The players and staff are good people and they have already made me feel at home. I am going to give it my best

The Royals face Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux on Saturday in the Sky Bet Championship, and Yakubu could be in line to start the match.
