Perez has seven caps to his name for his country, playing in Gibraltar’s 7-0 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in October but has never played football professionally and works as a fireman in Gibraltar.

The 28-year-old currently plays in the Gibraltar Premier Division for amateur side Lions Gibraltar FC and claimed on their Facebook page that the trials came about after discussions between manager Jeff Wood and Chairboys director Alan Parry.

Perez spoke on the post on the Facebook page too, thanking fans explaining what had happened and citing his desire for more professional football to increase his chances of regaining number one spot for Gibraltar.

He said, “Well a few months back I requested Jeff Wood the possibility of finding me a professional team that were willing to take me on board for training purposes.

“This came as a result of losing my number one spot with the national team, which made me realize I had to up my game in order to regain it. I am very determined to fight for my spot and when that opportunity arises again I want to be in the best form of my career.

“Initially Championship side Ipswich Town were more than willing to take me onboard and arrangements were being made, but a few weeks back League 2 Wycombe Wanderers also showed an interest and I saw this as an opportunity at the same time.

“If they were to be promoted they would definitely be looking to recruit another goalkeeper possibly two.

“Many might think my time to become a professional has gone and chances are very slight, arguably this could be true, but once you lose hope you might as well retire and I am not in that frame of mind yet.

“I have had trials with professional clubs in the past and I know what is expected of me, this time round I have much more experience and see myself in my best form so far.

“I will make the most of this trip, taking us much as possible onboard and will be training hard for a week at a professional level.

” I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jeff Wood and especially Lions Gibraltar F.C. for granting me this opportunity and covering all costs.”

Wycombe Wanderers are currently in 3rd place in Sky Bet League Two on 80 points and are looking on course for promotion to League One.
