Wycombe Wanderers defender Anthony Stewart has emerged as a potential target for Aberdeen, according to the Press and Journal.

It is understood that the Scottish outfit are weighing up a move for the 29-year-old this summer.

Stewart's current contract at Wycombe is set to expire later this month and thus he will become a free-agent if he doesn't agree to fresh terms.

The defender has been offered a new deal by the Chairboys but is currently mulling over whether to extend his stay at Adams Park.

If Aberdeen are able to convince Stewart to make the switch to Pittodrie, he would become their third signing of the summer as they recently secured the services of Jayden Richardson and Ylber Ramadani.

Stewart has featured regularly for Wycombe since rejoining the club in 2015.

During the previous campaign, the defender helped his side reach the League One play-off final by making 39 appearances.

Having suffered a 2-0 defeat to Sunderland at Wembley Stadium last month, Wycombe will be hoping to launch another push for promotion later this year.

Whereas some of their League One rivals have opted to sign players in recent weeks, Chairboys manager Gareth Ainsworth has yet to add any fresh faces to his squad this summer.

The Verdict

If Aberdeen are able to convince Stewart to join the club, this would unquestionably be a significant blow for Wycombe as the defender is a key member of their squad.

During the previous campaign, Stewart managed to make 3.8 clearance per fixture and win 2.1 aerial duels per match as he averaged a respectable WhoScored match rating of 6.65 in League One.

Having illustrated that he is more than capable of competing at this level, the defender could potentially go on to help the Chairboys make a positive start to the 2022/23 campaign if he stays at the club.

However, with Aberdeen eyeing a swoop, Wycombe may find it beneficial to draft up a list of replacements for Stewart in order to cover the possibility of the defender moving on to pastures new.
