West Brom inflicted further misery on Cardiff City last night, scoring four times to defeat Mick McCarthy's side.

The Bluebirds, who have now lost five out of their last six Championship matches, have conceded nine goals in their last two games.

Despite the pessimism around the South Wales club at the moment, The Baggies were back to their best during last night's 4-0 triumph.

Strikes from Karlan Grant, Alex Mowatt, Matt Phillips, and an own goal from Curtis Nelson awarded The Baggies a place back at the Championship summit, although, Bournemouth's game in hand comes tonight.

Speaking on Sky Sports whilst watching yesterday's match, Jobi McAnuff heaped praise on Mowatt's goal: “Wow, wow, wow.

“Alex Mowatt has scored some absolute crackers in his time, but I don’t know if he’s scored many as good as this.

“Half volley, catches it perfect, absolutely into the top corner – it’s an incredible strike.”

The verdict

Mowatt has grown a reputation of scoring wonderful goals from outside of the area, with the 26-year-old perhaps possessing the best left foot in the division.

Last night's strike seemingly killed the game off, preventing any Cardiff comeback that could have been on the cards.

Mowatt has been an excellent addition to West Brom's squad since his summer move from Barnsley, and it could be argued that he is the most important player in their side right now.

The midfielder offers a lot more than just the terrific goals that he scores, his range of passing and vision, coupled with his intelligence and tenacity, makes him a standout player in the division.
