Six years ago today, Derby County fans were waking up ready to book their train tickets to Wembley after booking their place in the Championship play-off final.

The Rams beat Brighton over two legs to book their place against Queens Park Rangers in the play-off final, after two very impressive performances indeed.

Steve McClaren's side were 2-1 up heading into the second leg after a superb away win at the AMEX three days before their meeting at Pride Park.

And, in the home leg, Derby ran rampant, winning 4-1 and 6-2 on aggregate thanks to goals from Will Hughes, Chris Martin, George Thorne and Jeff Hendrick.

Eventually, it turned out to be a heartbreaking end to the season for Derby, who lost to QPR in the final thanks to Bobby Zamora's late strike.

But Hughes has since took to Twitter to remember the play-off semi-final victory, after scoring with an audacious flick on that night.

Hughes made over 180 appearances for Derby before leaving for Watford in 2017, joining the Hornets for around £8m after coming through the ranks at Pride Park.

The Verdict

What a night that was for Derby, and what a performance they put in on what was bound to be a nervy night for all concerned with the club.

That goal sums up Hughes' real quality, and the strike gave them a two-goal cushion which would have settled the nerves at a perfect time.

Hughes is a real talent, and Derby fans would love to see him return to Pride Park one day, that's for sure.
