Bristol City could extend Adrian Mariappa's deal beyond January, according to Bristol Post reporter Gregor MacGregor.

The Robins announced the deal to sign the former Watford defender on Wednesday afternoon with the 34-year-old penning a deal until the New Year.

Mariappa started his career with the Hornets before establishing himself as one of the EFL's most consistent defenders.

A centre-back by trade, the Jamaica international made over 320 appearances for Watford while also spending time with both Reading and Crystal Palace.

But that experience won't guarantee him a place in Dean Holden's side.

Mariappa faces significant competition to get into Bristol City's back line with the likes of Alfie Mawson, Tomas Kalas, Zak Vyner and Taylor Moore all set to challenge for the same positions.

That said, the experienced defender will be confident of making his mark.

Should the international defender be able to make a positive impression on Holden and his coaching staff, MacGregor believes that the initial short-term deal offered to the centre-back will be extended.

Taking to Twitter, he said: "Adrian Mariappa joins Bristol City on a short-term deal until January.

"Wouldn't be surprise if that could be/is extended if all goes well. Defensive cover secured."

The Verdict

I think that this is a very shrewd signing by Bristol City.

Adrian Mariappa is a quality defender who knows exactly what it takes to succeed in the Championship and the hope is that he can do exactly that with the Robins.

As well as that the 34-year-old is a model professional and that can only be a good thing as Holden's side look to sustain their push for promotion to the Premier League.
