‘Would not get in a Sunday pub team’ – Many West Brom fans unsure over starter’s ability

Many West Bromwich Albion fans have said that Slaven Bilic will need to sign a new keeper this summer if they gain promotion to the Premier League.

Current number one Johnstone joined the club in 2018 from Manchester United after having moderately good loan spells with the likes of Preston North End and Midlands rivals Aston Villa.

Impressing at the Hawthorns during his first season, Johnstone kept his place when Bilic was hired as manager last summer, and has since gone on to make 37 league appearances in which he has kept 10 clean sheets.

Can you remember which West Brom manager signed each of these 15 players? Have a go now!

With the season at a standstill due to the recent pandemic, West Brom have been left in limbo over the end of the Championship season, sitting second place and very much on course for a promotion to the Premier League.

With that in mind and the potential of top flight football at the Hawthorns next season, Football League World’s Ben Crump asked fans via Facebook group boing boing Baggies: “Do you think Sam Johnstone will do well enough in the PL next season?”.

The response gained was generally mixed, but it does seem that many Baggies fans are not keen on the idea of the former Man United man being number one next season.

Jack Walker: No he’s only just about good enough for the Championship

Stuart hunt: Good Champs keeper but not sure about Prem

Steve Strain: Yes

Paul McCabe: No need a new keeper

John Wiggy Wiggall: Would not get in a Sunday pub team, cost us promotion last season

Nathan Davies: Zero evidence to suggest he will. Not even the most blinkered fan could say yes. Unfortunately…

Adam Wooldridge: No. Should not even be the keeper on the bench if we go up IMO

Mark Johnson: Have not go there yet

Micky Weavers: He will be fine if we get there, and the back four keep there concentration. How many better shot stoppers are out there?

Matty Callie: I think he will be fine. Improving a lot and has come on. Still has flaws but I think as fans we were spoilt by having Ben Foster. Can’t agree with a lot of the above and has been a massive scapegoat for some of our fans
