Burnley are reportedly set to sign Liverpool defender Sepp van den Berg on loan.

That's according to journalist Alan Nixon, who has reported via Patreon that the Championship club are set to beat local rivals Blackburn Rovers to the signing of the defender.

He impressed with Preston North End last season but may not be a popular figure at Deepdale if he joins the Clarets.

But would he be a good signing for Burnley? And do they need him?

Our FLW writers give their verdicts...

Sepp van den Berg was excellent for Preston last season and whether Burnley need the player or not, he is a solid player for the club to have.

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has already brought in plenty of players who make the Clarets one of the best teams in the division. Adding a player like van den Berg to the defence makes them even better and certainly has to make them the favourites for the Championship title. The club already have a solid backline but van den Berg has proven he can be one of the best in his position in the division.

Adding the player to their side then makes them have another valuable option - and having already played in the league with Preston, the Clarets and Vincent Kompany know that he is already up to scratch in terms of his performances and showings in the Championship.

Even with the player just joining on a season-long loan, he makes the club have a fantastic promotion-worthy Championship squad.

This would be a fantastic bit of business from a Burnley perspective.

We saw last season during his time with Preston what a quality defender van den Berg is so adding him to their squad makes a huge amount of sense.

Charlie Taylor has been used centrally by Vincent Kompany this term as it seems he doesn't feel Luke CJ Egan-Riley are quite ready for the Championship just yet.

Taylor has not looked out of place but adding more strength in depth at the position is still a wise move from the Clarets.

He was a popular figure at Preston and Blackburn are thought to be keen so it would frustrate their rivals well.

This would be another exciting addition but Vincent Kompany and there's every chance he could be a reasonably cheap addition, with the Dutchman likely to be surplus to requirements at Anfield.

It may be wiser to have a more experienced head in there with Ian Maatsen on the left and the likes of Taylor Harwood-Bellis and CJ Egan-Riley as defensive options, but the 20-year-old has plenty of game time in the Championship under his belt.

Already accustomed to Lancashire too, it shouldn't take him too long to settle in and with the funds the Clarets have, they will easily be able to get this deal over the line without any worries.

Not only can he play in a back four, but he's also shown he can operate in a back three, as a centre-back and a wing-back. This versatility can only be a good thing when injuries start to creep in, so this would certainly be a good signing.

It may also see Charlie Taylor and Maatsen compete for the left-back spot, though both are arguably too good not to start. With this, van den Berg could be starting in a back five with Taylor as a left centre-back and Maatsen as the wing-back.

The Liverpool man will certainly create some good dilemmas for Kompany with his flexibility, so this is a signing that should be ideal for all parties.
