Sheffield United continue to perform well in the Championship under manager Chris Wilder, with the Blades currently in fourth place in the table just three points off leaders Norwich City.

But manager Chris Wilder is not sitting on his laurels with recruitment in January very much on his mind according to a report on Football Insider, that says Wilder is planning a loan bid for Southampton striker Shane Long in the transfer window.

But are there any better striker options for the Blades other than Long?

We discuss.....

Jay Taylor

In all honesty, I think it is a signing that makes sense and in reality, would be a bit of a coup.

Shane Long has all the attributes to be successful in a Chris Wilder side.

Despite his age, he is still in good physical condition and would be a real handful in the Championship.

I can’t see any better alternatives in the mould of Shane Long anywhere at present.

Gary Hutchinson

Yes, lots.

There’re so many good strikers out there.

I’d be taking a punt on John Marquis.

Strikers are like managers; the same names often get recycled whereas the really promising ones are overlooked.

Look at Jack Marriott, there’s gold in League One.

Louie Chandler

If Wilder has his heart set on bringing in an experienced top-level forward, then no.

But if he just wants a good striker then delving further down into the Championship and possibly League One would be a much better idea.

Shane Long does not have the best goal-scoring record and would certainly be a gamble.

George Harbey

If United are looking for an experienced, proven goalscorer, then Shane Long is perhaps the best option as well as Jermain Defoe.

Both are ageing but are still capable of finding the back of the net in the second tier.

They would be shrewd additions.
