‘Would be terrific for Leeds’ – Danny Mills offers transfer advice to former club: Opinion

Danny Mills has told Leeds United they should consider a loan move for Liverpool midfielder Harry Wilson in the summer transfer window, if they want to be promoted to the Premier League next season.

Wilson enjoyed an outstanding season on loan with Derby County, scoring 16 goals and providing four assists in 43 league games as The Rams reached the Championship play-off final, only to miss out on a place in the Premier League at the hands of Aston Villa.

Despite that, Mills still believes that Wilson could make the difference as Leeds look to end their long wait for Premier League football, with the defender telling Football Insider: “Leeds were third in the league, they were not far off automatic promotion, they can go one step further by spending £10million and bringing three quality players in.

“They could get Wilson for £4million for the season if Liverpool don’t want to sell him, and he is someone proven in the Championship who will get you goals, take brilliant set pieces and create chances.”

Football Insider have reported that any club looking to sign Wilson will have to pay Liverpool a £4 million loan fee for the midfielder’s services.

So, is Mills right to suggest that Leeds should try to pay that fee?

We asked some of our Football League World writers for their opinions…

Kealan Hughes

“Wilson would be terrific for Leeds.

“It is no secret that he set the Championship alight last season, and he is exactly the type of player Leeds need.

“A key area of weakness last season was scoring goals. Bamford and Roofe are good players but they required better service, and Wilson would provide that. He is brilliant at set-pieces and would be a real game-changer for Bielsa’s side.”

Ben Lang

“This would be an excellent piece of business, if Leeds can afford it.

“Wilson has already delivered a full season of strong performances in the Championship and he would be an asset to any side in the league.

“I also think Wilson would fit the mould of player Bielsa wants and he could add some much-needed depth to Leeds’ attacking options.”

George Harbey

“I think this would definitely be money well spent.

“Wilson has been influential for Derby this season, scoring plenty of goals and producing plenty of assists from out wide.

“He’s ready for the Premier League, and it would be some coup if they were to sign him.”
