After winning automatic promotion from Sky Bet League One last term, Barnsley fans will be urging the club to keep hold of their key players, as they prepare for life back in the second tier.

Liam Lindsay certainly fits the bill of being a key player for the Tykes - the central defender came into his own under Daniel Stendel last season, and alongside Ethan Pinnock, he helped the Yorkshire club concede the least amount of goals in the division.

Now, reports from the Scottish Sun claim that West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City, Brentford and Derby County are all tracking the 23-year-old this summer, with Italian Serie B champions Brescia also believed to have made a £1million bid for the Scotsman.

Here, FLW writer George Harbey talks about Lindsay's future at Oakwell in this six-pointer...

Firstly, what did you make of Liam Lindsay last season? Worthy of attracting interest from bigger teams?

I thought Lindsay was exceptional for Barnsley last term.

He had a decent season in the Championship the season before, but I think the drop to League One allowed him to become a more mature, and just all-round better player in general.

Of course, Ethan Pinnock also deserves the plaudits for helping the Tykes keeping several clean sheets, but Lindsay was their commanding leader last season, and he has a big future ahead of him.

Can you see him being a Barnsley player next season?

I would be amazed if he stayed at Oakwell next season, especially with the kind of teams that are being linked with his signature.

Of course, Lindsay may not even want to leave Barnsley given the season he has just had with the Tykes, but you feel that if a team like Derby or West Brom came in for him, then he'd jump at the chance of signing for them.

They'll do very well to keep him next season.

If he does leave Barnsley, where would be the best move for him?

I think the destination that fans would immediately say would be either West Brom or Derby, as they finished in the play-offs last season.

But for me, I think Stoke would be a perfect move for him - Nathan Jones looks to be building something special this summer, having been linked with some pretty standout names in Nick Powell and Joe Aribo.

Next to Danny Batth, not only will the Potters have a solid defensive unit, but Lindsay would learn a lot off the former Wolves man, who has been there and done it.

Brentford in for Lindsay - should that move be of any interest to him?

I think Brentford would be another good move for Lindsay.

He is more than capable of playing the ball out from the back, which would make him an ideal player for Thomas Frank's side.

They need a replacement for Chris Mepham, especially if Ezri Konsa leaves this summer too.

Brescia bid £1million for Lindsay - thoughts?

They have got to be having a laugh.

Fair play to them for doing their analysis on a player from League One, but if they carried it out properly, then they would know that he is surely worth more than £1million.

I don't think a move to Italy would be a preferred choice for Lindsay, especially when promotion-chasing teams in England are after him.

With that being said, how much do you think he is worth?

It's actually quite hard to say. Defenders aren't really talked about in the media, it's the attacking players who get most of the attention.

Lindsay is a young, talented, mature centre-half who has just had a very, very good season for Barnsley.

If the Tykes have ambition, then they would look for around £4-5million this summer.
