‘Would be a tremendous signing’ – West Brom join Leeds in race to sign Rangers player: The verdict

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict’ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

West Brom manager Slaven Bilic looks like going head-to-head with promotion rivals Leeds United in the battle to sign Rangers defender Connor Goldson according to a report by Football Insider, with the current Championship leaders eyeing a swoop for the 27-year-old as a possible transfer target for either this month or in the summer.

Goldson has consistently performed well for the Gers and the Scottish side are eager to retain his services, but may well have a decision to make with several English sides interested in the defender.

So would Goldson be a good addition at the Hawthorns, is he needed and would he make the starting XI?

We discuss………

Jordan Rushworth

“A few weeks ago, you might not have thought the Baggies really needed another centre half adding to the squad, with Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley in good form and Ahmed Hegazi waiting for his chance to come back into the starting line-up on a consistent basis.

“However, the Baggies’ form has taken a real dip and Monday night’s defeat at home to Stoke City perhaps highlighted that Hegazi, who came in for Ajayi, is not in the same kind of form as he showed at times last campaign, so Slaven Bilic’s side might need to add another option at the heart of their defence.

“Goldson has developed his game very well over the last few seasons at Rangers, and he is starting to show real maturity and quality, which West Brom could well benefit from were he to arrive at the Hawthorns before the end of the window.

“Crucially Goldson has both previous experience of winning promotion from the Championship with Brighton, and also has the sort of composure in possession that would enable him to suit West Brom’s style of play, though he would face a battle for a regular starting place.”

“This could turn out to be a solid addition by West Brom if they can beat Leeds United to Goldson’s signature this month.

“One of Rangers’ stand-out performers this season, the defender has played a key role in helping them sustain a push for the title in the Scottish Premiership.

“Whilst Goldson has only featured on 29 occasions in the Championship during his career, he could offer some much-needed competition for the likes of Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley if he is able to adjust to life in this particular division.

“When you consider that West Brom have conceded 31 goals in 28 league games, it is clear that they need to bolster their defensive options and thus Goldson may fit the bill.”

George Harbey

“I think that Goldson would be a tremendous signing for West Brom and it would be a real coup to lure him away from Ibrox given his importance to the Glasgow club, as well as the teams that are interested in his services.

“Goldson is a natural leader, a quality that is rare to find in some players. He has transformed Rangers’ defence since arriving from Brighton and Hove Albion last summer, helping them boast the best defensive record in the SPFL under Steven Gerrard this season.

“He isn’t just a head-it-kick-it centre-half, either, as he is also impressive at playing the ball out from the back on the floor, which would make him a perfect acquisition for the Baggies who play an attractive brand of football under Slaven Bilic.

“You just feel that Albion are lacking that extra bit of quality in defence, having conceded more goals than anyone else in the top seven this season aside from Swansea, so if they manage to get this deal across the line, in my view, they would have the perfect squad.”
