Stoke City are believed to be keen on a deal to sign Charlton Athletic midfielder Alfie Doughty according to StokeonTrentLive.
Doughty has caught the eye with some impressive performances this term for the Addicks, who are well in the hunt to challenge for promotion into the Championship under the management of Lee Bowyer.
Bowyer’s side are currently sat sixth in the third-tier standings, and are just five points adrift of the automatic promotion places heading into the second-half of this year’s campaign.
Doughty has played a key role for Charlton this term, and has scored one goal and been on hand to provide two assists for his team-mates, as they look to win promotion back into the Championship at the first time of asking this term.
But a move to Stoke City could be tempting for the midfielder, with the Potters mounting a serious challenge for promotion into the Premier League this term.
The Potters are currently sat eighth in the second-tier standings, and will fancy their chances of making a long-awaited return to the top-flight.
But would Doughty be a good addition to Michael O’Neill’s squad?
You can see why Stoke are keen to sign Doughty this month as it seems they may be able to do a cut-price deal with Charlton.
The 21-year-old looks like a really bright talent and someone that is comfortable anywhere on the left flank, so winning the race for him could pay dividends for years to come.
Doughty’s versatility means that he could be a really useful player to have in the squad moving forward, even if he isn’t ready to have a huge impact right away.
Reports have indicated that the Potters have made a £650,000 bid already and even if it costs them double that, this will be a bargain in my eyes.
This would be a great signing for Stoke City.
Alfie Doughty is a player who looks set for a very bright future in the game and that’s been proven by the ongoing interest from Scottish champions Celtic.
A move to Parkhead probably still seems the most likely option, but if the Potters can strike a deal then they’ll be laughing.
Doughty is available for nothing at the end of the season and if Stoke can sign a player of his quality for free then they’ll be absolutely laughing.

This would be a top signing.
I’m a big fan of Doughty. He deserves credit for the way he went out on loan to Bromley and hit the ground running in the Championship upon his return to Charlton last season.
He’s very good at going forward and is also really comfortable defensively, and I think he’d fit right into Michael O’Neill’s system.
O’Neill likes to have really fit, athletic players in his team, especially out wide, as getting crosses into the danger areas is key for him.
Doughty would more than deliver on that side of the agreement.
