Newspaper chatter this weekend had Aston Villa linked with a trio of Premier League stars, Robert Snodgrass, Tammy Abraham and Everton's £25m man Yannick Bolasie.

The report emerged in the Daily Star, with all three players appearing to be mouth-watering prospects in the Championship. Snodgrass was a hero of sorts at Villa last season and Abraham is on the fringes of the England squad, but it is perhaps the mention of Bolasie that has fans most excited.

The 29-year old has fallen out of favour at Everton since his £25m move from Crystal Palace in 2016. He's played just 29 Premier League games in two seasons and missed out on the squad for this weekend's 2-2 draw with Wolves.

At the beginning of the summer Villa looked likely to struggle in the transfer market, failing to earn promotion had a huge cost which the owner looked unlikely to meet.

However, Tony Xia sold his controlling interest in the club to two billionaires in Egyptian Nassef Sawiris and American Wes Edens, who bought 55 per cent of the club for £30m. That freed up the funds to move in the market, albeit late on in the day.

Villa fans were sceptical of the Bolasie rumours, but confident that if it did come off it would be a big coup for the club. Here are some of their responses on Twitter.
