Charlton Athletic are moving closer to signing George Dobson from Sunderland, as per reports from Football Insider.

The 23-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Stadium Of Light and even spent the second half of last term on loan with AFC Wimbledon after struggling to break into Lee Johnson's plans.

Dobson made 36 appearances during his first season with the Black Cats, but was limited to just 11 last term before moving to Plough Lane.

With the Addicks looking to strengthen their squad ahead of a promotion push it seems that a move for the midfielder is all-but agreed, so would George Dobson be a good signing for Charlton?

The team at FLW have their say...

Chris Thorpe Dobson would be a quality addition for Charlton by all accounts. I saw a lot of him during his time on loan at Wimbledon last season and I was very impressed with his work rate and varied passing range. He is still at an age where he will continue to improve and I certainly saw a player that can be a leader for years to come. He is also capable of operating as a centre back when required, so could fill in there if Adkins and co encounter any injuries next season. He will provide a great defensive shield in front of the back line at the Valley and I know a lot of supporters of the Dons will be gutted that he has chosen not to return to Plough Lane. Toby Wilding I do think that this could be a rather useful singing for Charlton if they do indeed get it done. Looking at the make-up of Charlton's current squad, they are rather short on numbers in midfield, so that is something they will no doubt need to address heading into the new season. Dobson is a player who will add to their options in the centre of the park, and while things never quite worked for him at Sunderland, his loan spell with AFC Wimbledon did seem to show more signs of promise. As a result, Dobson is a player who could be useful for Charlton in League One next season, and at 23-years-old there is still plenty of time for him to develop over the coming seasons, meaning he could be a rather valuable asset to the Addicks in the next few years. With that in mind, it does feel like there is a chance this could turn out to be a smart piece of business for Charlton. George Dagless I think it could be a decent bit of business. Sunderland are obviously fairly happy to let him go with him falling out of favour their last season and I think a move to Charlton could be exactly what his career needs. He's still a young player with plenty of room to grow and under Nigel Adkins we should see that progression, with there spots in midfield available to him to challenge for. Charlton are looking to bring their average age of the squad down and I think Dobson is the sort of player they are right to be looking at; young, with good potential and with a bit of a point to prove.
