Brentford have joined the likes of Celtic, Rangers and West Bromwich Albion in the race to sign Peterborough United forward Ivan Toney, as per Football Insider.

Toney's future at Peterborough looks uncertain, on the back of an incredible individual campaign in Sky Bet League One for Darren Ferguson's side, and has been linked with Celtic and Rangers in recent times.

The 24-year-old scored 26 goals in 39 appearances in 2019/20, and has netted a total of 49 goals in 93 games since joining Posh on a permanent deal from Newcastle United last season.

Football Insider now claim that Brentford will look to target Toney this summer, regardless of whether they win promotion to the Premier League this term, or remain in the Championship ahead of 2020/21.

Here, the FLW team discuss this potential signing...

George Harbey

This has a very Brentford feel to it, and what a signing it would be.

I cannot see the Bees keeping hold of Ollie Watkins beyond this season if they don't reach the Premier League, so they would need to bring in an out-and-out striker to replace the prolific forward.

Whilst I don't think Toney is capable of making the step-up to the Premier League, I think he'd be outstanding in the Championship, and I feel that he needs a season to settle in the second tier before making the move to the top flight.

He's still only 24, and his pace and movement would undoubtedly fit into Thomas Frank's style of play.

This would be a massive statement of intent.

Sam Rourke

He'd be a terrific signing.

Toney is the complete striker for me and offers sheer pace, strength and clinical edge in-front of goal.

26 goals in one season is no mean feat and he's clearly ready for the step-up to Championship or even Premier League football.

What I like about this potential move is the amount of goalscoring chances that Toney is likely to get at the Bees, with the club possessing several creative catalysts in the form of Said Benrahma, Ollie Watkins, Bryan Mbeumo and co.

Toney is only 24 also, and has plenty of room to progress and get even better and I could see Brentford being a perfect home for the player, regardless of what division Frank's men find themselves in next season.

The striker offers a strong work-ethic and will fit nicely into Brentford's intense, attacking style of play, with several of his goals this season for Posh a result of him chasing down, and harrying opposition defenders.

I'm not sure they need him right now.

Brentford are currently challenging for promotion into the Premier League, and Ollie Watkins has led from the front in that promotion bid.

So, I just can't see Toney starting ahead of him anytime soon, and I would only expect this deal to go through if the Bees were to sell Watkins in the summer transfer window.

Toney has been brilliant with Peterborough United this season, scoring 26 goals in 39 appearances, but I have my doubts as to whether he'd be quite good enough to make the sizeable step up to the Premier League next season.

If Brentford are in the Championship next term, then he could be worth a punt for Thomas Frank's side.

But at this moment in time, they already have better options available to them in Toney's position.

George Dagless

He's worth a look if they do not get promoted.

If Brentford go up, they've got a chance of keeping Said Benrahma and Ollie Watkins and can also look at adding players proven at the top level.

I think Toney needs to prove himself in the Championship before making the leap to the Premier League and I can only see the Bees going for him if they miss out on promotion.

Indeed, if they are in the Championship next season, Watkins and Benrahma are surely likely to leave and then the Bees can look to do what they normally do and bring in players to help them evolve - Toney would fit into that nicely.
