As Cardiff City prepare for life back in the Championship, the Bluebirds have been credited with an interest in midfielder Lewis Holtby.

Reports from German media outlet Sport Bild claim that Cardiff are among a host of clubs interested in signing the midfielder, with Chicago Fire, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray also believed to be keen.

With the Welsh club also looking to sign Will Vaulks from Rotherham United, it seems as if the midfield positions are an area that Warnock is looking to strengthen this summer.

Here, FLW writer George Harbey discusses the potential signing of Lewis Holtby for Cardiff City...

For those who don't know, who is Lewis Holtby?

"Lewis Holtby is a 28-year-old midfielder who most recently played for Hamburg.

"The midfielder made a name for himself for Hamburg in his early years, enduring loan spells at Vfl Bochum and Mainz 05, before sealing a £1.5million move to Tottenham in January 2013.

"The German playmaker made just 25 appearances for the North London club, and after spending time on loan with Fulham, he made the move back to Hamburg in 2015."

What's his current situation?

"Four years and over 110 appearances later, Holtby is on the lookout for a new club having bid farewell to the German club.

"Hamburg is a club that he has real affinity with, but at 28 years of age, a new challenge is on the horizon."

What attributes could he bring to the Cardiff City Stadium?

"Holtby probably hasn't scored the amount of goals that he would have liked in his career, but he is a very creative player who would add some real flair to Neil Warnock's side.

"He only scored 14 league goals during his time at Hamburg, but he loves to pick the ball up and find teammates in perfect goal-scoring opportunities.

"I think he's a player that they definitely crave."

Do they need to strengthen their midfield?

"I'd say that Cardiff definitely need to bolster their options in the middle of the park, especially with Harry Arter going back to Bournemouth and Aron Gunnarsson leaving the club upon the expiry of his contract.

"Holtby is an all-rounded midfielder, but he thrives playing further forward, and as alluded to before, he's a player that they definitely miss."

Can you see a deal being done?

"It will be hard for Cardiff to sign Holtby this summer, given the calibre and the size of the other clubs that are meant to be interested.

"Galatasaray are the Turkish champions and will be playing in Europe next season, and whilst Fenerbahce may have had a poor season last term, they are still a massive club.

"Chicago Fire are also likely to offer him big bucks in an attempt to sign him too, so Cardiff will count themselves lucky if they do manage to lure him to South Wales."

What would you make of this signing?

"I think this would be a massive coup if Cardiff were to sign Holtby.

"His time in England wasn't the greatest, but he has got back to his best over in Germany and is ready to make the next step.

"Neil Warnock will know how good of a player he really is, and he would be the perfect manager for him too."
