Birmingham City manager Pep Clotet could have a battle on his hands in his pursuit of Rangers out of favour goal-keeper Wes Foderingham, with Middlesbrough also interested, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The Blues have expressed an interest in the 28-year-old, who remains part of Steven Gerrard's plans at Ibrox but has predominantly been on the bench as back-up to Allan McGregor.

So would Foderingham be a good fit at St Andrews?

“A goalkeeper is probably what Birmingham need to focus on in January with their current crop not really filling the side with much confidence at the minute.

“Lee Camp started the season as the club’s number one but his performances did not warrant staying in the side after a string of high-profile mistakes, which has led to Connal Trueman taking the reins in the last six games.

“While he hasn’t been truly poor, relying on an inexperienced ‘keeper might not be the best route, so moving for Foderingham could be smart to add consistency to the role.

“The Rangers stopper is out of contract in the summer so he wouldn’t command a large fee in January, so this could present Birmingham with a very solid transfer move.”

Ben Lang

"The goalkeeping department is definitely an area Birmingham should be looking to improve in January, and Foderingham would represent an upgrade on the likes of Lee Camp and Connal Trueman.

"Neither of these players has particularly impressed in the first half of the season - with Trueman having replaced Camp in the side of late - and Foderingham could be a good option given he will be eager to get his career back on track.

"The 28-year-old has struggled for minutes at Ibrox this campaign given Allan McGregor's form between the sticks, and Foderingham will surely now be eyeing a move to the Championship in order to become the number-one choice.

"It might be considered something of a risk for Birmingham to select Foderingham as their main target, seeing as he has not been playing regular football of late, but he is a goalkeeper with plenty still to offer."

Chris Thorpe

"I think this would be a great addition for Birmingham, Foderingham has great Football League experience and would seemingly slot straight into the side under Pep Clotet.

"At the age of 28, the goalkeeper will no doubt be seeking one final career move as he looks to end his career on a high, with a move back to England sure to be high on his own personal agenda.

"He is also firmly out of favour at Rangers, meaning that a departure for the goalkeeper is now a big possibility and much will depend on how much Birmingham are willing to pay for him.

"In conclusion, this is a move which would be something that could benefit all parties, as it would get Foderingham off the wage bill, provide the player with more game time and give Birmingham an experienced option in between the sticks."
