Michael Appleton has emerged as the front-runner to become the new manager of Lincoln City, as the Imps look to replace former boss Danny Cowley.

The 40-year-old departed the League One side for Huddersfield Town last week, after guiding the Imps from the National League to the third tier in the space of three years.

Plenty of names have been linked with the vacant role at Sincil Bank following the departure of Cowley, with Newport boss Michael Flynn and Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth both reportedly targeted.

But a new name has now entered the frame to become the new manager of the Imps, with Michael Appleton believed to be in talks with the club, via reports from Lincolnshire Live.

The 43-year-old was reportedly present to watch the Imps in action against Rochdale on Tuesday night, where Tyler Walker's header salvaged a point for City.

Appleton is currently in charge of West Brom's under-23 side, but has endured managerial spells with Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool before.

His most recent managerial spell came in charge of Oxford United - he guided the U's to promotion from League Two in 2016, but left the Kassam Stadium a year later to become the assistant manager of Leicester City.
