‘Worst striker I’ve seen’, ‘Garbage’ – Sunderland fans issue brutal response as striker departs

James Vaughan has left Sunderland to join League One leaders Wigan Athletic after a tough spell with the Black Cats.

The 29-year old striker managed just two goals in 23 games during his time with the club and leaves with Sunderland bottom of the league.

His departure leaves Chris Coleman desperately short of forward options after top scorer Lewis Grabban was recalled by Bournemouth.

Simon Grayson brought Vaughan to the Stadium of Light in the summer on a two-year deal after he scored 24 goals for Bury last season.

However, the former Everton man struggled to adapt to his new surroundings and will return to the third tier with the Latics. Vaughan made the move in time to be able to play for Paul Cook’s men as they take on Peterborough tomorrow.

Given his poor record in front of goal, it’s perhaps not unsurprising that Sunderland fans are glad to see the back of Vaughan. And, here’s how they reacted on twitter…
