Darren Moore has admitted that he is sweating on the fitness of three key players this weekend, as the Baggies look to put their annihilation at the hands of Derby County behind them.
They were beaten 4-1 at home this week, missing a chance to go top of the table and falling two points behind the chasing pack. They’re one of three sides on 24 points, one of six separated by just two at the top.
They host Blackburn this weekend desperate to bounce back quickly, but they could be without a trio of key players. Leading scorer Dwight Gayle is struggling for fitness, as is defender Kieran Gibbs. Both were withdrawn at half time of the Derby rout.
“We think Dwight’s might have been a muscle spasm,” Moore told the Express and Star. “Kieran picked up another injury, this is the demands and the physicality of the league.”
Defender Ahmed Hegazi missed that match too, he was suffering a hamstring strain and is another who is doubtful for this weekend’ clash.
“Ahmed had a tough gruelling international campaign and he had just two days to recover (before Wigan). That injury’s come through fatigue. He had a little strain.”
The Baggies travel to Hull a week tomorrow, before a huge clash with Leeds United on November 10th.
Losing Gibbs and Gayle is going to be a big blow, especially the on-loan forward. He’s been electric so far this season and it is the Baggies ability to score goals that has kept them in the race. At the back, only four teams in the division have conceded more.
All the more reason to get Hegazi and Gibbs back too. It could be a tough afternoon against Blackburn if all three are missing.
