Sheffield Wednesday have been placed under a transfer embargo.

The Owls have been extremely quiet in the transfer market over the course of the summer, with the focus at Hillsborough going into getting a number of players off the books.

Jordan Rhodes has departed on-loan, whilst Jack Hunt has also headed for the exit door.

Andy Giddings from BBC Sheffield is now reporting that Sheffield Wednesday have been placed under transfer embargo, with more details of their situation set to be announced early next week.

Jos Luhukay was placed in charge earlier in 2018, but Joey Pelupessy has been his only high-profile addition, with the Owls holding back after two years of chasing promotion under Carlos Carvalhal.

Under Carvalhal, as Wednesday built an impressive squad, they finished in the play-offs in consecutive years.

In 2016, Carvalhal’s side suffered a play-off final defeat to Hull City, whilst the following year they were defeated at the semi-final stage by Huddersfield Town, who eventually went on to secure Premier League football.

Under Luhukay, Wednesday begin their season this afternoon, with the Owls travelling to Wigan Athletic to take on Paul Cook’s side.

The Verdict

This isn’t the news Wednesday need right now, with the season starting and the transfer window ticking away.

Luhukay’s squad is still filled with talent, but after last season’s disappointing effort, bodies needed to be added.

This embargo won’t help and Sheffield Wednesday’s supporters will be waiting nervously for further updates on Monday.
