Reading could be dealt a potentially season-defining blow to their survival hopes, with the news that Nelson Oliveira could be ruled out for the season.

Jose Gomes revealed in a post-match press conference with BBC Radio Berkshire, that Oliveira might not return to the side before the end of the season.

This development will come as a huge blow for the Royals, as Oliveira had looked like he had solved Reading's lack of goals up-front.

He arrived on loan from Norwich for the remainder of the season and has scored some crucial goals for Gomes' side which has won them vital points.

Oliveira picked up a hamstring injury in Reading's last-gasp win over relegation rivals, Ipswich Town - a game in which he scored the opener in.

Reading supporters will now be fearing the worst, with their hopes of staying in the Championship hanging by a thread this season.

Gomes' side are currently sat 21st in the league table and are just a point ahead of Rotherham United heading into the final eight games of this year's campaign.

The Royals boss will need the likes of Danny Loader and Yakou Meite to provide some much-needed goals to the Reading side as they battle to stay in the second tier of English football.

The Verdict:

This is a huge blow for Reading.

Oliveira had been their main outlet for goals since arriving at the club and his absence will leave a notable void in Jose Gomes' starting XI.

They need other players to step up in his place, otherwise I can't see them retaining their Championship status.
