Leeds United defender Gaetano Berardi is set for a lengthy spell out, with Marcelo Bielsa confirming he has suffered a hamstring injury.

The 30-year-old missed out as the Whites drew with Nottingham Forest last week and Bielsa told the Yorkshire Evening Post that it's a serious injury.

"A lot of time. It's not a simple injury. I don't know how to explain it, the level of the tendon went the other way, it's turned around.

"I will ask the head of medicine department to give you the information because I am just repeating what I have been told and maybe I'm not explaining enough."

Berardi has featured eight times for the Yorkshire club this season and this injury has come at the wrong time for the club.

That's because first-choice right-back Luke Ayling is going to miss two months after he went off with a knee injury against Forest.

Given that, Stuart Dallas is likely to start at right-back as Leeds face Wigan on Sunday. Bielsa's side head into this round of Championship fixtures in second place, just two points behind leaders Sheffield United.

The Verdict

This does not sound good at all for Berardi and the player will be gutted after missing games earlier in the season through injury.

As well as that, it's a blow for Bielsa who has now lost two right-backs in a few weeks, which is a major setback.

Now, it's down to others to step in as Leeds have a huge run of fixtures taking them into the New Year.
