Sheffield Wednesday face a battle to land Adam Matthews, with Barnsley and QPR also keen on the right-back who is out of contract in the summer.

The 27-year-old is currently at League One Sunderland, playing 23 times for the Black Cats in their promotion push, although he has been an unused substitute for the two play-off games so far.

That's because Jack Ross has gone with Luke O'Nien in that role and he has played a key part in helping the side to successive clean sheets against Pompey.

Football Insider revealed earlier in the week that Steve Bruce is keen on bringing the full-back to Hillsborough in the summer as he looks to strengthen his Owl squad.

However, the same outlet has now reported that they face competition to land the ex-Celtic man, with Mark Warburton's QPR and newly-promoted Barnsley both monitoring Matthews situation.

They state that if Sunderland fail to beat Charlton at Wembley then the player will definitely leave, but if they return to the Championship then a new deal may be on table from the north east side as well.

The Verdict

This is a concern for the Owls as Bruce will want to get his business done early and Matthews would be a decent capture if they could convince him to join.

But, they will still feel they are a more attractive option than the R's or the Tykes so you can't rule out that move going through.

Ultimately, Matthews will be keeping his options open until after the play-off final and it seems he will have a few offers to choose from.
