Bolton's chances of keeping David Wheater at the club appear to be over and ambitious Salford City are the latest club to show an interest in the player.

The centre-back has been a crucial player to Phil Parkinson's side over the years but his contract ran out this summer.

Despite that, the League One outfit were hoping to convince the 32-year-old to stay, however it appears that he will be moving on, with Bolton News reporter Marc Iles revealing that he won't be staying.

And, an update from Sun journalist Alan Nixon has stated that newly-promoted Salford are making a bold move for the experienced centre-back as they gear up for their first season in the Football League.

Wheater had previously been linked with Scottish side Kilmarnock but that will not be happening now.

Bolton's off-the-field issues continue to hamper the club and with no new owner in place it seems as though building for the new season is proving to be problematic. They will start next season in the third tier on -12 points.

The Verdict

It would be very surprising to see Wheater drop down to League Two but Salford are obviously well backed and have shown they are serious about moving up the leagues.

From Bolton's perspective they will be gutted that they won't be able to re-sign the defender but he has to make a decision on his future and he won't want to keep waiting.

Wheater has proven himself to be a top player in League One so he would have been a real asset next season.

Ultimately though, the club have bigger issues right now but things need sorting quickly with the campaign just a month away.
