Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough are interested in signing Charlton Athletic defender Anfernee Dijksteel this summer, according to reports from The Sun.

New Boro manager Jonathan Woodgate will be looking to reshape the squad left at his disposal by Tony Pulis this summer, and Addicks defender Dijksteel is believed to be on his transfer wishlist.

The 22-year-old, who plays mainly at right-back but can also operate slot into midfield, made 39 appearances in all competitions for Lee Bowyer's side last season, as they won promotion from League One.

The Dutchman came through the ranks at the Nike Academy, before making the move to The Valley in 2016. He has since made just shy of 60 appearances for the Addicks.

Now, it is claimed that Boro are interested in signing the defender, who still has one year left on his current deal at Charlton.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer will be looking to keep the core of his squad together as his side embark on life back in the Championship, especially after signing a new deal of his own on Tuesday afternoon.

The Verdict

Dijksteel had a really impressive season with Charlton last season, and in my view, I saw him as the unsung hero in that Addicks side.

Looking at how Middlesbrough played last season, it's clear to see why they would be interested in a player like Dijksteel as he's a really athletic player who provides real thrust down the right flank.

He would also fit into a five-man midfield really well, and Boro could potentially get him for a cheaper price than usual, with his contract up in a year's time.
