Middlesbrough could be edging closer to naming their new manager after one of their potential contenders dropped out of the running.

Earlier in the week former Portugal star Jorge Simao had reportedly entered the race to become the new manager at the Riverside. However, according to respected journalist Alan Nixon, Simao has now taken a job in Saudi Arabia, putting an end to any sort of discussion about the 34-year-old and Boro.

Nixon also claims this could well have a big impact on Jonathan Woodgate's hopes of landing the job with his hometown club, with the former England man being rumoured to be a prime candidate for the role earlier in the week.

Boro chairman Steve Gibson is still looking for a replacement for the departed Tony Pulis, who was relieved of his duties after failing to get the club into the top six and dividing supporters with some performances which were well below what the Boro fans expected.

Woodgate is one name among a host of managers being considered by Gibson, who is seemingly taking his time to ensure he gets the right man in charge ahead of next season.

The Verdict

Let's be honest, Simao was never going to be coming to Boro, so it is a boost for Woodgate.

Gibson is doing the right thing in taking his time though, and it's refreshing to see a chairman do their due diligence and take a measured and considered approach.

Woodgate could well get the job, but at least he will have got it on merit.
