Leeds United’s Chris Wood has praised his teammates and head coach Garry Monk for his excellent form, after the striker picked up the Championship’s monthly award, according to the EFL's official website

Wood received January’s Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award, as his impressive goal scoring kept Leeds in the hunt for promotion.

The striker scored six goals last month, taking his tally to 18-league goals this season. Wood was quick to praise other people at Elland Road: “My own improvement has been a reflection on how well the team are playing. We’ve come on leaps and bounds from last year and we’re creating loads more chances.”

Wood continued: “People under-estimate what the backing of a manager or players can do but these boys have backed me all the way through the season.”

The New Zealand international beat David Stockdale, Tom Lawrence and Joe Ralls to the award.

Wood was on target in Leeds’ 2-1 West Yorkshire Derby defeat to Huddersfield Town last weekend, as the Whites fell seven points behind the automatic promotion places.

Monk’s side are still well poised for a promotion push during the final three months of the season, currently sitting fifth in the Championship.

Wood will be hoping to continue his scoring form this weekend when Leeds entertain Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City at Elland Road.
