Will Grigg arrived at Sunderland in January as their saviour, the £4m man set to replace Josh Maja and fire them to the Championship.

Last night, the Stadium of Light held their collective breath as he raced clear of the Blackpool defence, knowing the right run to make at the perfect time. He rounded the onrushing keeper, leaving him with the simple task of slotting the ball home to deliver all three points.

Instead, he fired wide.

It was a striker's nightmare, the momentum of his run taking him a little wider than he might have liked, the covering defender ready to pounce if he pulled it too close to the far post. He missed, Sunderland drew 1-1 and automatic promotion just got a tiny bit harder.

There were few fans lamenting him on Twitter after the game. His huge fee and promise are still the overriding factors, the joy at having finally captured their man still creating a haze of positivity. There's a belief he'll come good, that he couldn't miss the chance again if he tried.

There's support for the former Wigan man, as you can see below, but deep down the fans will know he needs a goal to compensate for the blow to his confidence that miss could bring.
