Wolverhampton Wanderers are one of the clubs chasing Joe Allen after Stoke City were relegated from the Premier League, according to a report by The Sun.

Stoke lost 2-1 at home to Crystal Palace at the weekend, confirming their relegation to the Championship.

And as a result, their star players - including Joe Allen - are likely to leave the club.

The Wales international is now at the centre of a five-club transfer battle with four Premier League sides set to scrap it out with La Liga outfit Sevilla for the playmaker's signature.

Newly-promoted Wolves are eyeing a move for Allen to partner Ruben Neves in midfield with the potential free signing of Jack Wilshere looking unlikely given Arsenal's improved contract offer.

But Wolves face competition from West Ham United, Newcastle United and Swansea City in the battle to snap up the Welshman.

Allen was pursued by West Ham last January and the Irons are keen to return for him this summer to improve their midfield options while Swansea could make a move for their former star if they remain afloat in the Premier League.

Stoke are holding out for £20m for the 28-year-old, who signed a five-year contract when he joined from Liverpool in 2016 and that did not include any relegation clauses.

The Verdict

Although £20m is quite steep, Allen is now in the prime of his career and excelling in Stoke's midfield.

The midfield man has a lot of talent on the ball and his Premier League experience is exactly what is lacking at Wolves.

If Nuno Espirito Santo is able to pair Neves and Allen, then he has both solidity and creativity in his midfield ranks.
