Championship outfit Wolves are weighing up a deadline day move for Burnley striker Ashley Barnes, reports reliable journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

The 27-year-old moved to Turf Moor back in 2014 after a four-year stint at Brighton & Hove Albion, and has been part of a Clarets squad that have twice won promotion to the Premier League, first in 2014 and then again in 2016.

And the former Plymouth Argyle forward enjoyed his best season to date last term in helping Sean Dyche’s men avoid top-flight relegation, with Barnes netting six goals and laying on three assists to help the club to a 16th place finish in the division, six points clear of the bottom three.

Yet recent reports from Nixon on Twitter suggest that the 27-year-old could be on the move at some stage today, with Championship side Wolves reportedly reigniting their interest in the forward in a bid to bolster their ranks ahead of the rest of the season.

The Midlands outfit have brought in several new and high-profile players over the summer in a bid to be battling near the right end of the second tier table once again, although the departure of striker Nouha Dicko to Hull City on Wednesday has left them slightly short in the striking department.

And with Barnes falling down the pecking order at Burnley following Chris Wood’s arrival, as well as today’s signing of Nahki Wells, it remains to be seen whether Wolves are indeed able to get a deal done before today’s 11pm deadline.

The Verdict: Time is ticking on on deadline day and yet Championship side Wolves have still yet to replace striker Nouha Dicko, who secured a permanent move to Hull City on Wednesday.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo would unlikely have sanctioned the move if he didn’t have a replacement lined up, and that replacement could well be Barnes, who was linked with a move to Molineux earlier in the month, and has again been linked with one today.

The 30-year-old has failed to start in either of their two Premier League games this term to suggest that he’s falling down the pecking order, and with 150 Championship matches under his belt and two promotions to match, he could be the man Wolves need to lead them to a promotion push this term.

Only time will tell though whether a deal can be struck.
