Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing goalkeeper Rui Patricio, according to reports in the Italian media.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Wolves will go head to head with Napoli in an attempt to lure Patricio to the West Midlands.

It is no secret that now Wolves have secured promotion to the Premier League after winning the Championship title, they are looking to strengthen their squad.

Nuno Espirito Santo is already scouring the transfer market for possible new additions and many names have been mentioned with the transfer rumour mill in full swing.

Patricio is the latest name to appear on this list.

Sporting Lisbon are keen to keep their star man for next season and will hold out for €35m, which is his release clause.

But Wolves face competition from Napoli for the 30-year-old.

Napoli are set to lose Pepe Reina this summer and they have lined up Patricio as the perfect replacement.

The 68-cap Portugal international has spent his whole career at Sporting Lisbon, racking up over 450 appearances for the Portuguese giants.

Wolves currently have John Ruddy between the sticks but they have been linked with moves for Stoke City's Jack Butland and Alex McCarthy of Southampton as they look to provide competition for places between the sticks.

The Verdict

Ruddy has had an excellent season in goal, earning the Championship's golden glove award, and if Wolves cannot bring a new goalkeeper in this summer, he is still a solid option to have.

But the truth is that Patricio would be a major upgrade and they should definitely try to snap him up.

Nuno will be hoping that the Portuguese contingent at Molineux is enough to persuade Patricio to quit Sporting CP and join the Premier League new boys.
