Sunderland defender John O'Shea is set to disappoint Wolves and sign a new contract with the Black Cats, according to the Sunderland Echo.

Wolves were one of the main threats to Sunderland with regards to the services of O'Shea, but they will be bitterly disappointed to see the Ireland international sign a new deal in the North East, meaning they will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

O'Shea has become a mainstay of the Sunderland team since moving to the club from Manchester United, and was one of the better performers last season despite the club being relegated back to the second tier of English football.

He is set to sign a new 12 month deal with Sunderland, taking his time with the club into a seventh season.

Known for his versatility, O'Shea became a vital part of the Man United squad under Sir Alex Ferguson, where he won numerous Premier League titles and secured the Champions League.

His experience will be vital for Sunderland in the Championship if they are to make a good crack of winning immediate promotion back to the top flight, and the news will no doubt be welcomed by most at the Stadium of Light.
