Leeds United are set to miss out in the chase for highly-rated brothers Irfan and Ikhsan Fandi.

Birmingham Live reports the Singapore internationals are in Birmingham for a trial with Wolves and have already spoken to manager Nuno Santo.

That would seem to scupper any moves by Marcelo Bielsa's side for the talented brothers as a Premier League move beckons.

Irfan is the older of the two at 20, and operates at centre back.

Ikhsan, 19, is a probing attacking midfielder and both have represented their country.

As well as Leeds and Wolves, Dutch side Groningen have also been looking at the pair, with them spending time on trial in the Netherlands earlier this year.

Former Newcastle goalkeeper John Burridge has worked with both players and was full of praise for them.

He compared Irfan to Manchester City defender John Stones, saying: “They are two great youngsters, superb athletes with great mentality. Irfan is the oldest of the two and very versatile . He can play in defence, midfield and attack.

“Ikhsan can play in midfield and attack. Both brothers have got overseas experience having played for club sides in Chile and they also had trials in Holland for Groningen, where their father, Fandi Ahmad, was a professional so I think they can adapt to playing overseas."

The Verdict

Leeds might just be missing out on an impressive double-swoop here.

Both brothers seem to have the credentials to succeed, but one wonders whether starting in the Championship, where first team football might be easier to come by, would have been a better option.
