Super-agent Jorge Mendes is negotiating a deal which would see Joao Cancelo join Wolverhampton Wanderers for €40m, according to reports in the Italian media.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Wolves is the likely destination for Cancelo as Mendes gets to work on making this happen.

Cancelo has just finished a successful loan spell at Inter Milan and he has returned to Valencia.

Inter are keen to keep the right-back, who can also play as a winger, and they face competition from Italian Serie A giants Juventus too.

But Wolves are in pole position to capture Cancelo with super-agent Mendes helping to finalise this deal.

Mendes has been responsible for a number of top players joining Wolves recently, including Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro, Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo is keen to bolster his squad ahead of their upcoming Premier League campaign and Cancelo is a top target.

The 24-year-old was not named in Portugal's 23-man squad for the World Cup and will not add to his seven international caps but this could speed up his big money switch to Wolves.

The Verdict

Cancelo is the perfect attack-minded wing-back that Nuno needs this summer.

Although Matt Doherty played very well last season, he needs competition in that right-wing-back spot and Cancelo would surely be good enough to replace him.

The Portuguese defender might also favour a move to Molineux, where there is a strong Portuguese contingent of players and staff to help him settle into a new environment.
